Here's a fun little quiz for ya. What is the title of my post referring to?

A) It's my birthday and this is my shiny new age

B) The number of seconds before I want to strangle the ass hats with whom I work

C) The temperature I woke up to this morning

A - I wish; B - 5 seconds would be more like it; C - Correct!

Apparently, "Cold" is the new "Fall" in Minnesota this year. I think we had approximately two and a half days so far that could be considered "fall-like." The average temp this time of year is a lovely 65 degrees or so, but for the past week the temps haven't made it out of the 50s, and most days haven't made it out of the 40s.

As I was sitting on the couch deciding whether or not I was coming down with a cold, I heard one of our brilliant local meteorologists say the word "frost." S'cuze me? It's October 8. I'm still harvesting tomatoes and peppers and onions from my garden to make yummy fall chili and spaghetti sauce.
A frost this early in the season would be detrimental to my gardens, not to mention the effect it would have on my usually cheery disposition (shut up). I reach over my dog who has planted herself strategically between me and the remote. After a few good face-lickings, I retrieve the remote and turn up the volume. "Damn you! You too-much-hair-spray-wearing, caked-on-make-up, shiny foreheaded weather forecaster!!" My dog promptly gets up and runs to her bed, probably thinking that last sloppy dog kiss across my nose is what set me off. "FROST?!?" This means I have to get off the cozy couch, put on some warm clothes, and go outside to clean out my garden. The vodka-cranberry I was about to make myself will have to wait.

Anyway, the whole point of this story was to show this lovely photo to you of the veggies I was able to save before the frost set in last night:

I had a bunch more hot peppers and about 10 more onions, but I just love the color of these tomatoes. Beautiful! I have an awesome chicken tortilla soup recipe that is great with fresh tomatoes. I'll share that with you all later. For now, I'm off to whip up some chili! And possibly turn up the furnace...

Oooooh, I'm so jealous!!! Our tomato plants were crap this year. They didn't grow any fruit until August, and then they just turned big and fat and green and refused to ripen. WTH? Any advice from a successful tomato farmer?

And where's that chicken tortilla soup recipe?!!!
